ISP Mail, DNS & Caching Infrastructure at Scale
Deploying public mail, DNS and caching services for an internet service provider.
The situation
An internet service provider needed reliable public-facing mail, DNS and caching services for its subscriber base.
The environment
Linux servers, mail services, DNS, web caching and networking.
The problem
Public services had to stay fast and available under heavy query and mail load.
My investigation
Reviewed traffic patterns, service dependencies and upstream/downstream requirements.
What I did
Deployed public mail servers, DNS and caching servers, then tuned the services for scalability and reliability.
The result
Stable, scalable public services supporting the ISP subscriber base.
What I learned
For public services, reliability comes from designing for load and planning the failure modes up front.
